Every HiLux flap conversation starts at the back of the ute. Workmate and SR cab-chassis models wear a tray, and tray guards are exactly what sized mud flaps were made for — the flap bolts flat inside the guard face, job done. Toyota even sells a genuine HiLux tray flap at 285mm wide, which tells you everything about what fits: our 270×300mm and 300×280mm cuts sit dead in the factory's own width band.
Tray sizing runs like this. 4x2 on standard-width guards: 235×255mm, $90 a set. 4x4 on stock tyres: 270×300mm for steel or factory guards, 300×280mm for aftermarket alloy trays — $115 either way. On 33s or bigger, step up: 300×350mm steel ($145) or 350×450mm alloy ($225), because big tyres throw mud harder and further.
SR5, Rogue, GR Sport — tubs play a different game
A pickup HiLux has no flat guard face behind the rear wheels — those factory "flaps" are little mouldings hanging off the tub. There's nothing to bolt a sized flap into, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with zip ties. Tubs run the Flappie Frame: 300mm wide, adjustable 205–255mm drop, hangs off the body. Frames are $100 a pair, printed frame-cut sets are $110 — and once the frames are on, a new design swaps in minutes.
Rogue and GR Sport only come as pickups, so if you're in one, frames are the answer, full stop. SR5s are mostly tubs but cab-chassis versions exist — go by what's behind the rear wheel, not what's on the badge.
Alloy trays aren't all the same. A genuine Toyota tray runs standard-width guards; a Norweld or MITS build runs whatever the builder welded that week. Sixty seconds with a tape measure inside the guard settles it before your order does. Do Flappies fit an SR5 with a tub?+
Yes — via the Flappie Frame (300mm wide, 205–255mm adjustable drop, $100 a pair). Tubs have no flat guard face for a bolt-in flap, so the frame hangs off the body and any frame-cut design slides straight in. Same answer for Rogue and GR Sport — they're tub-only.
What size for a HiLux with an alloy tray?+
4x4 on stock tyres: 300×280mm suits most alloy tray guards ($115). On 33s and up, go 350×450mm ($225). Toyota's own tray flap is 285mm wide, so most HiLux tray guards take a ~300mm cut — but measure inside the guard, because custom builds vary.
Will they fit a 4x2 Workmate?+
Yes — the 235×255mm cut suits standard-width 2WD tray guards, $90 a set. Half the fleet utes in the country run this exact setup, and there's no rule saying a fleet ute has to be boring.
Are mud flaps legally required on a tray-back?+
Every wheel needs an effective wheelguard, and on tray-backs the flap usually completes the system. WA guidance puts the lowest edge around 230mm off the ground (300mm for off-road builds). We print flaps, we don't write law — check your state's rules.
